Understanding Insomnia

What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that makes it difficult to fall asleep, stay asleep, or achieve restful sleep. People with insomnia may experience fatigue, irritability, and difficulty focusing during the day. Chronic insomnia can impact physical and mental health, often worsening anxiety, stress, or depression.

Causes of Insomnia

Insomnia can be triggered by various factors, including:

  • Stress and Anxiety: Ongoing worries can keep the mind active, preventing restful sleep.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Irregular sleep schedules, caffeine, and screen time before bed often disrupt sleep.
  • Medical Conditions and Medications: Pain, hormonal shifts, and certain medications can contribute to insomnia.

Evidence-Based Treatments for Insomnia

Therapeutic approaches that have shown effectiveness in treating insomnia include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I): CBT-I is considered the gold standard for insomnia treatment. It helps identify and change thoughts and behaviors that interfere with sleep.
  • Clinical Hypnotherapy: Hypnotherapy induces relaxation and can address underlying anxiety or stress that disrupts sleep. Evidence supports its effectiveness for managing sleep issues and promoting deep relaxation.
  • Lifestyle and Sleep Hygiene Adjustments: Regular routines, a calm sleep environment, and mindfulness practices can improve sleep quality.
