Understanding Depression / Low Mood

What is Depression?

Depression is more than feeling sad or having low energy—it’s a persistent mental health condition that affects mood, energy, motivation, and overall well-being. Symptoms can include prolonged sadness, feelings of hopelessness, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep and appetite, and a loss of interest in daily activities.

Causes of Depression

Depression often arises from a combination of factors, such as:

  • Genetics and Biology: Family history and biochemical changes can contribute to depression.
  • Life Events and Trauma: Stressful experiences, trauma, or significant losses can lead to low mood and depressive symptoms.
  • Environmental and Lifestyle Factors: Chronic stress, isolation, and lack of support are common contributing factors.

Evidence-Based Approaches to Treating Depression

Effective therapeutic treatments include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT helps identify and challenge negative thought patterns that perpetuate depression.
  • Integrative Psychotherapy: By combining multiple therapeutic approaches, integrative therapy is tailored to your unique needs and experiences.
  • Clinical Hypnotherapy: Hypnotherapy can address underlying beliefs and promote relaxation, helping individuals find relief and reconnect with a more positive outlook.
