Understanding Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

What is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterised by persistent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) that individuals feel compelled to perform. These obsessions and compulsions can interfere significantly with daily life and lead to considerable distress.

Causes of OCD

The development of OCD can be influenced by various factors, including:

  • Genetics: A family history of OCD or other anxiety disorders can increase risk.
  • Brain Function: Abnormalities in certain brain areas may contribute to OCD symptoms.
  • Environmental Factors: Stressful life events and trauma can trigger or exacerbate symptoms.

Evidence-Based Treatments for OCD

Effective treatments for OCD include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Particularly Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which involves gradual exposure to fears and learning to refrain from compulsive behaviors.
  • Medication: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly prescribed to help reduce symptoms.
  • Clinical Hypnotherapy: Hypnosis can help to rewire the brain to move away from the anxious, obsessive thoughts typical of OCD into a calmer state.
